Close Reading is a reading strategy in which readers critically examine a text through repeated readings. Close reading allows students to dig deeper into the text and answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how. It helps our little learners to look for story structure patterns, new vocabulary, key details, author’s purpose and inferential meanings.
Close Reading for Little Learners (Nursery Rhyme Edition) is a unit to help our youngest readers practice the important skill of close reading.
In this unit you will find:
-An overview of close reading
-What close reading looks like in a K and 1st grade classroom
-5 nursery rhymes with vocabulary and comprehension questions
-Graphic organizers, interactive journal pages, retelling activities for each nursery rhyme!
*Please keep in mind that close reading is a difficult skill for students to master. I always guide my students through these activities. They can be used in a whole group setting or in small group during guided reading.
I really hope you and your students enjoy this unit!
