You've never had your students making connections about literature like this!
Help your students grasp the masterful way Tim O'Brien presents images in his chapter "The Man I Killed" from his Vietnam War novel The Things They Carried. In this adaptable lesson, students are introduced to the concept of literary impressionism as they identify repeated elements in an excerpt from the chapter. Then, they visualize connections and surmise what this repetition has to do with the themes of the chapter/novel. This activity can be low tech, by utilizing colored pencils or markers, or can be vibrantly demonstrated as a whole class activity using a J Touch Interactive Board. . . but color is important! Students can work individually, then compare in small groups, or whatever works for your specific classroom setting!
