In the attached PDF, you'll find a short nonfiction passage (approx. end of grade 2 level readability according to the new common core), a paraphrasing page, text-dependent questions, and vocabulary in context page (along with a cover/credits page).
These are all the activities involved in close reading. There is minimal clip art because part of close reading involves no schema to be pre-activated and no pictures to support meaning. The children are to derive meaning from paraphrasing, summarizing, and understanding the text structure.
This lesson takes 3 reading periods and shouldn't be done in one sitting unless you are using it for third grade remedial students or tutoring.
The students should be comfortable with using and reciting synonyms before this lesson.
