In the attached PDF, you'll find a short nonfiction passage (approx. end of grade 2/beginning of grade three level readability according to the new common core), a paraphrasing page, text-dependent questions, and vocabulary in context page. There's also a page that helps use synonyms with tricky words (meant for whole group) and a cover/credits page. These are all the activities involved in close reading.
There is very minimal clip art because part of close reading involves no schema to be pre-activated and no pictures to support meaning. The children are to derive meaning from paraphrasing, summarizing, and understanding the text structure.
This lesson takes 2-3 reading periods and shouldn't be done in one sitting unless you are using it for fourth grade remedial students or tutoring.
The students should be comfortable with using and reciting synonyms before this lesson.
