In the attached PDF, you'll find a short passage (approx. end of grade 5th/beginning of level readability according to the new common core lexile stretch bands), a paraphrasing page, and text-dependent questions. These are all the activities involved in deriving meaning close reading. There is not really any clip art because part of close reading involves no schema to be pre-activated and no pictures to support meaning. The children are to derive meaning from paraphrasing, summarizing, and understanding the text structure.
This lesson takes 2 reading periods and shouldn't be done in one sitting unless you are using it for older remedial students or tutoring. It's also great for home schooling lessons.
The students should be comfortable with using and reciting synonyms before the implementation of this lesson.
