PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Engage your students in close reading of Tom Robinson’s trial in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In this activity, students review the questions, comments, and responses of the following characters from the trial: Mr. Gilmer, Atticus Finch, Sheriff Tate, Mr. Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson. They gather text evidence, identify purposes, and make inferences during this activity. Then they assume the roles of jury members and evaluate the evidence, determining a verdict and writing rationales for their decisions.

This activity makes reading fun, requires students to look closely at the text, and encourages them to use critical thinking skills. Teacher instructions include procedures and options, including possibilities for jigsaw activities or learning stations. The following handouts are included in the 10-page file:
-teacher instructions
-student instructions
-graphic organizers for each character
-graphic organizers for jurors
-newspaper article template
