Kindergartners CAN do Close Reading! I start early in the year and model how to highlight the main idea and circle unknown words. As the year goes on, students are able to do more and more on their own.
I always start by reading the passage aloud to the class. Then I give students their own copy. Each student needs a highlighter and a pencil. I place my copy under the doc cam and we work through the text together, highlighting the topic throughout the text. Volunteers read, or as a group we read, line by line, circling higher level vocabulary words, discussing the meaning in context. We add quick sketches in the sketch box as we go. At the beginning of the year this process takes 2-3 days. In the middle of the year we completed the process in 30-40 minutes. At the end of the year, most students are able to complete the process on their own in 20 minutes.
*Please know that I am not an expert on Close Reading and the file is not cutesy or fancy. The pages are very plain, without clipart, so that students can focus solely on the text and their own sketches.
