In this bundle, you will get:

The Lost Colonies Close Read
Your students will be required to independently read at higher text complexity bands with the Common Core. To prepare for that, students need to be exposed to readings with complex syntax and difficult vocabulary in order to build confidence and abilities. This close reading, "The Lost Colonies" by Alfred E. Church, summarizes the Revolutionary War and provides key information as to why the British lost and our colonies became America. With this activity, you will find:

* Clear instructions for use
* Suggested discussion activities for students, either during the reading or post-reading, which will heighten their engagement.
* Annotated text for the teacher, with questions and the matching standard
* Separate reading text for the students, with some defined vocabulary where context is lacking.
* A final writing assignment with matching standard, which can be assigned as classwork or homework.

The provided public domain text is at a Lexile level of 1155, which is at the high end of grades 6-8.

A Wrong: from A Young Macedonian
This close reading of "A Wrong: from A Young Macedonian in the Army of Alexander the Great", by Alfred Church, is a Greek story rich in characterization and vocabulary. With this activity, you will find:

* Clear instructions for use
* Suggested discussion activities for students, either during the reading or post-reading, which will heighten their engagement.
* Annotated text for the teacher, with questions and the matching standard
* Separate printable reading text for the students, with some defined vocabulary where context is lacking.
* A final writing assignment with matching standards, which can be assigned as classwork or homework.
* Suggestions for a challenge writing assignment, to build on the assigned writing piece
* A 4-3-2-1 rubric, with various criteria with which to grade the writing assignment. These criteria can be blended to achieve scores that reflect elements of each.
* A short quiz with an answer key, to use in addition to or instead of the teacher-directed questions

The provided public domain text is at a Lexile level of 1180, which is slightly above the new range for the 6-8 text complexity grade band. However, this is designed to be a scaffolded activity and not independent.

Close Reading in the 4-5 Grade Band: A Japanese Fable
This close reading of "The Tongue-Cut Sparrow", adapted from the Japanese version, is rich in characterization and with a theme evident from text-based examples. With this activity, you will find:

* Clear instructions for use
* A 4-3-2-1 rubric, with various criteria with which to grade the writing assignment. These criteria can be blended to achieve scores that reflect elements of each.

The provided public domain text is at a Lexile level of 930, which is at the upper end of the 4-5 Grade Band. However, this reading could also be used as an independent activity or assessment with sixth graders, as it's below their scaffolded level.

You will find these step-by-step activities an effective way to build exposure to higher complexity bands, extend students' abilities to engage in in-depth discussions, as well as further students' capacity to write effectively about what they have read.
