“Close Reads for Animal Lovers” includes 9 different reproducible, single-page texts to engage middle or high school students in reading exercises correlated to the Common Core College and Career Readiness anchor standards for reading. These exercises can be used alone as English/language arts lessons, or they could become part of an interdisciplinary science and environmental education unit. The texts provide no-frills, rigorous reading practice of varying text complexity, many with a nature-loving twist, perfect for International Baccalaureate emphasis on the Area of Interaction: Environment. Text-dependent questions are linked to reading standards and require thought-out answers--not just multiple choice guesswork. Think about it. Your students could get lost trying to read all of Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, so why not give them a one-page excerpt, a description of a comical red squirrel, to entice their curiosity and flex their analytical skills!
