Students perform a close read of, "O Captain! My Captain!" and analyze it through annotation and discussion to gain a deeper understanding. Students will read the text multiple times, making annotations to interact with the text through questioning and forming ideas. They will then discuss their annotations and findings and take part in a student led and teacher facilitated dialogue involving text dependent questions. A close read will benefit any classroom and lends itself to the Common Core standards and the Danielson Framework. The lesson includes an introduction to close reads and the instructions for implementation.
