Included in this pack are directions and recording pages for two games (Close to 100 and Close to $1.00) that practice the skill of adding 2 or more addends to a sum of near 100. The only supplies needed to play the games are a deck of digit or coin cards (not included, but you probably already have in your classroom), a copy of the game directions, and a pair of students ready to game up! (I love those easy-to-set-up-and-go games!) If you want a way to assess your students or keep tabs on their progress, use the recording page to have them record their thinking as they play the game.
A deck of playing cards (faces removed) can be used as your digit deck. There are a ton of free coin decks/cards listed on TPT – take your pick, if you don’t have one already yourself. I have coin & digit decks from both Everyday Math and the Investigations series, which I use for these games.
These are great, quick games that involve a lot of strategy and mental math - perfect for a not-so-boring way to practice facts and to reinforce place value and coin values! I have used both of these games as part of Everyday Math and the Investigations programs, and as stand alone games! My kids really love both of them, and they are quick to play, so even if you only have a 10 or 15-minute slot, these are great picks!
