So much more fun than just writing words with short vowels!
This is a practice worksheet where students identify closed syllable nonsense words with the short vowel /a/ sound based on understanding and applying the rules for closed syllables (ends w/ a consonant & contains 1 short vowel).
Words within the coloring practice activity are comprised entirely of nonsense words in order to ensure that students can understand and apply the rules for decoding closed syllable words without being able to use memorized words, or sight-word knowledge. This activity truly tests if students can read the words based on the rules for closed syllables and apply specifically to words with short vowel sounds: a, e, and i.
Great activity for ESL students (Level 1 & 2) as well as for kids with reading disabilities and younger children learning to decode in English. Coloring sheet includes a color-coded answer key. Great way to practice decoding skills!
