The discussion-based, no cutting, no gluing, no ticker-tape solution to geologic time.
If you are tired of yards of ticker-tape and sticky desks or if you just need a way to liven up the geologic timeline, this is for you!
Get students engaged and contemplating when events occurred and talking about their preconceived notions of Earth's history.Have students work as a whole class or in a small group to make their best guess about the order of events in Earth's past. Then take time to move the events to their actual locations on the clothesline timeline. Questions for discussion and a follow-up handout give students time to process what they are learning about geologic history and how the geologic timeline works.
- 2-page handout with a modified version: A student handout with questions and information about when the geologic events occurred. Questions encourage students to consider and calculate the immensity of geologic time as well as why there are divisions.
- Answer key: Potential responses or look-fors to go with student handout. Work is shown for all math problems.
- 39 timeline cards in color or black/white: Illustrated cards depicting significant events in geologic history for students to attach to clothesline with clothespins.
- Directions and tips based on use in an actual Earth Science classroom.
