These cloze passages are great for beginning readers! Many struggling readers over-rely on the use of visual cues (phonics). You can use cloze passages to teach them to use structure and meaning to decode.
This packet includes:
* 8 original passages with omitted words and a word bank.
* a variety of fiction and non-fiction passages.
* passages appropriate for every day or seasonal use.
* answer keys for each passage.
Cloze passages are short stories with omitted words. A word bank helps students determine which word makes sense in the blank. The passages can be used as an intervention strategy with a struggling reader. They can also be used as a mini-lesson with the whole class or a small group. They can even be made into self-checking activities for early finishers. Answer keys are provided.
Cloze passages (think “closure”) are an excellent resource for remediating beginning readers. Many readers over-rely on visual or phonetic cues when decoding text. Because cloze passages require students to think about “what makes sense” in the sentence, they force readers to use meaning and structure cues. This encourages more efficient decoding and keeps the focus on comprehension.
To complete the activity, students read the passage and choose words from the word box that make sense in the sentence. After using all of the words, students should reread to make sure the passage makes sense.
