I use this cloze activity with level 2 kids. I try to get songs that span different decades, and they laugh at how "totally 80s" this is when they see the video. I also like that this song isn't by a single artist or band (though it was written by Jean-Jacques Goldman), but rather, was a group of artists who came together to sing this song and raise money for soup kitchens.
Here's how I grade cloze activities:
-In a five-day week, we listen 1x/day, at the beginning of each period. I consider hearing it 4x to be a "full week". If you're in class every day, that 5th listen through is just a bonus listen! I collect the songs every day after they listen.
-On Friday we correct together.
-If you get HALF or MORE of the words right (I tell them if it's not EXACTLY RIGHT, mark it wrong), you get 2/2
-If you get anything under half, you get 1/2
-On Fridays, if there is a video for the song (and if it's appropriate) we watch it!
*I make cloze activities very small point values so they don't feel the need to cheat because, obviously, the lyrics are online.
