This activity is a great review for closed, VCE, open, consonant-le syllable, vowel-r, and double vowel concepts! Each student gets a “CLUE” board (6 are included – different words but same concepts). You read the clues (concepts) to the students, they find the word on their board and cover it with a chip or use a dry erase marker to make an “X” on the board (chips and markers not included).

Students should know the following concepts: closed, vowel-consonant-e, open, consonant-le, vowel-r, and VV (or vowel team) syllables and syllable division, This file primarily deals with vowel teams.

You can also have the students use a dry erase marker on laminated boards to “code” the words (examples, divide syllables, underline digraphs, circle nasal chunks, box exceptions, etc.) They should also read the word to you. I read the concept, have them find the word, and then take turns reading the word they chose out loud.
