Coach Carter is based on the true story of Ken Carter, who take over as the high school basketball of the inner-city Richmond Oilers. Carter uses discipline and high standards in an effort to teach the young men he works with how to win in life as well as on the basketball court. This movie illustrates that high school students often have many issues in their lives that they bring to school and the gym and that a coach is more than just an instructor of skills.
Each of our movie lessons and activities includes response/discussion questions that students can answer on paper or the teacher can use as starters for whole group discussion. In addition, there is a partner/group activity that takes the principles of the movie and asks students to take action and grow in their own lives. Finally, there is a RAFT (Role-Audience-Format-Topic) writing prompt to help students apply their new knowledge.
