This is an original collection of poetry each one of which, is dedicated
to the men who tipped their lanterns to the daylight before going underground
and to the other men, women and children
who all the while held their hearts in their hands.
a couple of the poems are from a rat's perspective. The rat and the coal miner...close but oftentimes unwilling friends.
These have been highly successful in my classrooms over the years, as much a celebration of community culture as an introduction to the topic of coal mining itself.
