Students will read informational text about coastal uplands and delineate between the beach and fore dune, transitional scrub zone, and maritime forests. This is an outdoor field trip activity where students are actually exploring these areas. They will ID three animals representing each of the coastal zones and draw them. Students are encouraged to record what the animals were doing at the time that they were observed.
Coastal Plants Bingo is a game students can play. When they find a complete row or diagonal on the bingo board, then they win. As they mark off each plant seen, they are to record if it was found in the beach and dune area, transitional zone, or the maritime forests. This will help students really learn the difference between the areas and start to associate which type of plant can be found there.
