This activity requires students to create their own "Coat of Arms" using symbols that represent them and their family. The students can be given this as a classwork or homework assignment and really enjoy that they get to tell about themselves. I typically show examples of what a real Coat of Arms picture would look like to give them the basis for the project, but theirs will be more of a collage or poster depicting their interests. Some students will choose basic symbols while others will really give some in-depth responses. This can be used with stories where a Coat of Arms is mentioned such as "Cask of Amontillado" by Poe or "The Musgrave Ritual" by Conan-Doyle but can be used as a separate activity as well. It definitely helps the students learn more about one another.
