To add some variety to weekly spelling word work, I created alphabet coding charts for students as a way of practicing spelling words in a less conventional format. After printing and laminating a class set of these letter code charts, I placed some at a spelling center while others were kept in a basket for those students who preferred to work independently. In this resource, I have included several chart themes that include: colored shape codes, colored shape codes with numbers (3 levels of difficulty) Halloween, veggies, fruit, and flowers just to name a few.
This spelling activity was a big hit with my students from second grade through sixth grade and eliminated a lot of the grumbling and moaning that often comes with the mention of spelling practice.
Differentiation of difficulty is provided.
This is a great activity for rainy days when recess is indoors.
