I designed this project for beginner programmers 7-10 years.

It introduces nearly all of the Scratch Jr programming blocks, interface and paint editor in a fun and "hands-on" way as well as key CS concepts; parameters, sequencing, algorithms, parallel programming.

As the “Paperless Educator” I have conducted coding workshops since 2014. This Scratch Jr Fussy Frog Coding project has been thoroughly tested in a

live workshop situation with children 7 -11 yrs, so you can be assured that they will

gain real benefit from it and have fun.

What You Will Need To Complete The Project:

To use this resource you will need to install the free Scratch Jr coding app on your

• IOS iPad/Phone device

• Chromebook

• Amazon Device or

• Android Tablet device.

What is included?

The resource contains QR codes and/or direct clickable links to 6 step by step child-safe videos hosted on Safe Search TV,

Safe Search does not allow any sidebars, clickable links or any other content to show to the student.

The video tutorials cover the following skills:

Video 1

An introduction to the project and a sneak peek at the finished result!

Video 2

Introduces the Scratch Jr Paint Editor and guides you as you create Fussy Frog’s

habitat, using vector shape tools.

Video 3

We Introduce the main character Fussy Frog and start to make him move, jumping

from lilypad to lilypad! The

background was hand-drawn in the previous video so the programming to make Fussy

Frog Land accurately will be

unique. By trial and error and debugging your code the best parameters will be chosen

to achieve your objective.

Video 4

We introduce speech and refine the motion of the main character.

Video 5

Time to introduce some more characters! We explore triggering blooks, look blocks,

loops,and repeats and the go-home

block

Video 6

Time to explore the text tool and titles. We name the project and learn how to save

and share your finished project with

others.

You should be able to complete this project in 3 /4 40 minute Sessions, depending

on how many original ideas the student wishes to add to their project once they

understand the key programming skills introduced!

What You Will Need To Complete The Challenges:

To use this resource you will need to install the free Scratch Jr coding app on your IOS iPad/Phone device, Chromebook, Amazon Device or Android Tablet device. 

How To Use This Resource:

The debugging challenge images are presented within this PDF 

(There is no need to print the resource as the Debugging Challenges can be easily viewed via any PDF viewer). 

Follow These Steps:

  1. Observe each challenge image carefully.
  2. Recreate the Scratch Jr programs shown in the image by copying the characters and the code. 
  3. Press the green play button to test the existing code and observe carefully what happens.
  4. Try to connect the code with the action that plays out on the screen
  5. Read the text on each image that outlines the problem you need to solve
  6. Debug or change the code to solve the problem that is presented.

Hot Tip: Be prepared to arrive at the solution by a system of trial and error.

Eg: Tweak the code, press the green play button to test it, tweak it some more, test again, etc
