This lesson was used with a bilingual class of Spanish speakers. Their content areas were taught in Spanish, and I was their sole English teacher. Most of them were reluctant to learn English, so I tried to engage them with interesting and fun lessons.
I used this lesson early in the year to give students confidence in their new language. There are so many Spanish-English cognates! Part of the lesson involves the class creating a list of common cognates. I put this up as a poster in the class to serve as a constant reminder of the similarities between the two languages. Included with the lesson plan is a partial list of common cognates taken from the internet.
This lesson uses the workshop model and has a checkbox for the teacher to circle which standards they are using in the lesson.
