The Cognitive Content Dictionary Template is a GLAD vocabulary and comprehension strategy used to teach unfamiliar words and reinforce comprehension.
This form should be thoroughly modeled for student use. To begin, introduce a new word and discuss it's part of speech. Have students make predictions as to what they think the meaning may be; decide on a common prediction to use for the whole class. Have students (in pairs or small groups) find the meaning and create a simple definition and/or sketch. Finally, have the students use the word in a sentence to check for understanding. Continue practicing the vocabulary throughout the day, week, unit, etc. to reinforce acquisition.
Begin using the Cognitive Content Dictionary as a whole-group and small-group cooperative vocabulary strategy before having students use it individually.
