Product Description
This unit contains many activities to help teachers teach students how to identify coins.

Activities included in this Unit:

Day 1: Introduce the Penny
Allow students to explore real pennies and/or plastic play pennies. Talk about the attributes of a penny.
Create an anchor chart about a penny. A Frayer model would work great for this.
I talk about the value briefly, but the Kindergarten TEKS only require students to IDENTIFY the coins by name. They do not have to know the value or be able to count coins until 1st grade.
Display the poster with the “Penny.”
Create the mini booklet “A Penny” together as you discuss the attributes of a penny.

Day 2: Introduce the Nickel
Follow the same plan as listed for the penny.

Day 3: Introduce the Dime
Follow the same plan as listed for the penny.

Day 4: Introduce the Quarter
Follow the same plan as listed for the penny.

Day 5: Review all the Coins
Have students sort the coins in small groups.
You can use the individual mats or the larger mats with one coin per page.
Have students complete the “Sort the Coins” chart worksheet

Day 6: Review all the Coins
Create a Foldable or an Interactive Notebook page

Day 7: Review all the Coins
Play “Show Me the Money” game
Have students complete the worksheet “Name That Coin.”

Day 8: Review all the Coins
Play a game such as “Matching,” “Inside Outside Circle” or “Quiz-Quiz-Share” with the coin cards.
Create a “Stack Book” with all the coins from smallest size to largest size, so student can really see the relationship of the size of the coins to each other.

Day 9: Assessment
Individually assess students by showing them real coins and asking them to name them OR name the coin and have the students point to the correct coin.
