This is an adaptation of my "By the Digits" game, but using coins instead of ones, tens and hundreds. Players take turns selecting a number and using it to select that number of pennies or dimes. At the end of 5 rounds, the player adds up the totals for the dimes and pennies, adds them together and sees how close to a buck he/she came.
There are several different versions of this activity, including combinations of pennies, nickels and dimes, as well as pennies, nickels and quarters and pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
This is a fun way for students to develop estimation skills when working with money, as well as reinforcing ideas like place value, skip counting nickels, dimes and quarters, and adding money together.
