This hands-on activity challenges students to think creatively about ordinary objects and practice categorizing things within a (slightly) complex system. Opportunities for observation and self-initiated parameters are built into the activities. Students also get more familiar with coins and their values as they complete these interactive journal pages.
This activity can be used in math centers or one-on-one with students (K-2nd grade) to help them practice sorting, categorizing, and using Venn diagrams -- all while getting more familiar with coins and their values. They'll love playing with real money -- and the venn diagrams challenge them to observe unique characteristics of objects and sort them according to several categories. These activities can be adapted for use with students from Kindergarten (or Pre-K) through 2nd grade.
Answer keys are included as well as a blank venn diagram with suggestions for sorting other objects into self-chosen categories.
