1979: A year the world fell apart.

Americans learned of the Cambodian Genocide, in which 2,000,000 people died. That same year, the Ayatollah Khomeini took over America's Cold War ally, Iran. And as a second oil crisis hit, it appeared the whole world was running out of oil.

Meanwhile, the Soviets had their own problems. They invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Was it a war of conquest, or were they defending a new communist regime?

These many crises--and many more--made 1979 perhaps the most important year for the world since 1945. But where 1945 ended a world war, would 1979 start a new one?
