This is a six page document I have used for both my honors and at level classes for the Cold War. This assignment covers the key events of the Cold War from 1945-1959 from the Potsdam Conference to the rise of Castro in Cuba. The list of events are:
Iron Curtain Speech
Soviets Get the Bomb
China Goes Communist
East and West Germany Created
WARSAW PACT created
Cuba Goes Communist
There is a chart packet for each event. Part 1 of the chart packet requires students to provide a 1-3 sentence description of each event, the year, key leaders and who won the event. Within this are event cards. Each event card provides key information about each event. The students will use the event cards to complete Part 1 of the chart packet. I have them do this in groups as they can work together and share the cards.
Part 2 of the chart packet does not require the event cards. For this, there is a map of Cold War Europe with three questions to answer, a brief chart comparing the goals, type of government and alliance of the US and USSR. Finally there are 2 summary questions.
I have the students do this activity in groups of 4-6 for part 1 with the events cards. However, once they are finished with that part, I have students complete the rest with a shoulder partner.
Student have found it as a good way to reinforce what they have learned for the 1st half of the Cold War. Some years I have used it as the primary method to deliver content. Other years I have used it to supplement and reinforce content.
I hope you find it useful. I have also posted a similar activity that covers the Cold War events 1960-1991 in the same manner.
