From 1964 to 1975, the Cold War escalated across the world. As the Vietnam War threatened to suck in both China and Russia, other conflicts emerged:
* China terrified both the Soviets and the Americans by developing the bomb in 1964.
* The Czechs nearly created a free society in 1968--until the Russians crushed their new democracy with tanks.
* And the United States elected a crafty president--Richard Nixon--who played China and Russia off against each other and formulated a new policy of peace. But Nixon was later forced out in disgrace.
Was it the same old Cold War, with the threat of armageddon? Or was it a new Cold War, where what looked like peace was really just part of a grand manipulative game?
