This two to three day mini-unit examines the Cold War and the use of propaganda throughout. In the lecture, which is accompanied with guided student notes, American capitalism and democracy are compared with Soviet communism to provide students with a general context of the ideological differences. The unit also includes an in-depth primary source examination of the use of propaganda in JFK's "Moon Speech." The reading is scaffolded including a vocabulary activity to preview the reading, annotated reading strategies for the reading, and review questions to check for student understanding. The final assessment is a propaganda poster project that students have really enjoyed each year.
