Did the U.S. win the Cold War or did the Soviet Union lose it? That is the guiding question for this review lesson on the Cold War. Included in this download:
Student handout with major Cold War events:
Truman Doctrine/Marshall Plan
China becomes Communist
Formation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact
Bay of Pigs Invasion
Berlin Wall built
Cuban Missile Crisis
Berlin Wall falls
Soviet Union dissolved
For each of the above events, students need to choose who "won" and explain. After completing the score card, students reflect and answer the guiding question.
A teacher key is included as well. Teaching duration is flexible. A few ideas on how to use this activity:
1. Assign as a cooperative learning activity. Divide the class into 11 groups/pairs. Assign each group one of the events. Have them use their notes from the unit to complete their section of the score card and then report to the class.
2. Assign the score card for homework. Go over in class the next day as a review for a Cold War test.
3. Distribute the score card at the beginning of the Cold War unit. As each event is taught in class, have students complete that section of the score card. By the end of the unit, their score card is complete and ready to review for a test!
