PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This packet includes a POWERPOINT & A FILL-IN-THE-BLANK VERSION of the PowerPoint for when students are absent or if you want them to follow along with you as you teach the unit.

This PowerPoint is a fifth grade unit for the Cold War. It goes along with the support document of the SC state standards, but most standards on the Cold War are the same throughout other states. It uses application of thinking maps, color codes, acronyms, reviews, videos, etc. throughout the PowerPoint to review and master the information. It is easy to understand for teachers, students, and their parents. It would be useful to present to the class and place on your webpage for students to review at night.

The Cold War Unit – Grade 5 consists of 2 PowerPoints, along with 2 PDF versions.

*****1. The first PowerPoint is in color with all the information, like a normal unit’s PowerPoint.

*****2. The second PowerPoint is a black-and-white FILL-IN-THE-BLANK PowerPoint that I print out when students are absent. I print 4 slides to a page, and they have to go through the PowerPoint (either in class or at home for homework) to complete the fill-in-the-blanks in order to catch up.

*****I also have included a PDF version of both, just in case the fonts are not downloaded on your computer.

The SC standards that it covers are below:

Standard 5-5 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the social, economic and political events that influenced the United States during the Cold War era.
5-5.1 Explain the causes and the course of the Cold War between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the United States, including McCarthyism, the spread of communism, the Korean Conflict, Sputnik, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War.
5-5.2 Summarize the social, cultural, and economic developments that took place in the United States during the Cold War, including consumerism, mass media, the growth of suburbs, expanding educational opportunities; new technologies, the expanding job market and service industries, and changing opportunities for women in the workforce.
5-5.3 Explain the advancement of the modern Civil Rights Movement, including desegregation of the armed forces, Brown v. Board of Education, the roles of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X; the Civil Rights Acts, and the Voting Rights Act Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

All of the above is in the PowerPoint.

***Please note that this PowerPoint is not meant for one, long lecture. It is meant to be broken down among a two week unit. Also, it is editable, so you can make it your own. Feel free to change, add, or take away anything you choose.***
