This activity is aligned to common core standards:
RF.K.3.a Demonstrate basic knowledge of letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary or most frequent sound for each consonant.
RF.K.2.d-Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel and final sounds in three phoneme words.
RF.1.2.c Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel and final sounds in single syllable words.
Provide either beginning letters sound, CVC or CVCC/CCVC playing cards for this activity, depending on the readiness levels of your students. A student selects a card and reads the picture. Students can select a card and place it on the playing mat. They then write their answer on the mat’s mittens and open the card to see if they are correct.
Teachers: Print a playing mat for each child in your station or center. Then print, laminate and cut apart all the playing pieces. You will then fold the playing card in on the dotted line and secure it with a clothes pin. Playing cards are color coded to match either the cvc or cvcc/ccvc playing mats.
