I usually stick to high school topics, since this is what I teach, but I created a basic math mosaic for my own 5-year-old, and after seeing how motivated and engaged he was, I decided to make a collaborative colouring task for beginners too! I think this falls under the grade 1 curriculum (add and subtract numbers up to 20).
3 VERSIONS INCLUDED! (.pdf and .docx)
All versions consist of 25 unique worksheets:
◾ Just Addition
◾ Just Subtraction
◾ Mixed Addition and Subtraction
CHECK OUT THE PRODUCT PREVIEW to see a sample of each version!
Students solve the problems inside the squares, then colour the square according to the answer. Their sheets combine to create the large mosaic image!
1. Calculate the answers.
2. Colour the squares.
3. Cut out your section.
4. Combine with the class!
A complete colour and number answer key is provided for each version, giving the coordinates to help you assemble the mosaic (i.e. A2... E5...).
If you like this product, be sure the check out the whole Collaborative Math Mosaic directory
, sorted by topic!
(Although, the topics are mostly middle school / high school... feel free to recommend to a colleague!)
Leave the picture a secret or show it for motivation… it’s your call.
Encourage students to check their answers by finding them in the randomized list on their worksheet before they colour each square. This will increase the accuracy of the final picture!
All my “Colouring by…” worksheets use standard pencil-crayon colours found in the Crayola 24 pack. For best results, use the exact colour name match (and encourage quality colouring!). Perhaps a class set of pencil crayons would be a fun math department investment!
Feedback, suggestions, and frontline stories are always welcomed!
Thanks for checking this out! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
