Overview: This product was designed to meet Common Core Standards in Speaking & Listening for grades 3 and up. According to the standards, students need to be able to “engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade-level topics and texts, building on other’s ideas and expressing their own clearly.” The Conversation Cards included in this pack, give students prompts to help them engage in conversation, based on grade level texts and topics.

Rules and Roles: The standards state that students should “follow agreed-upon rules for discussion and carry out assigned roles.” The Conversation Rules sheet is designed to develop rules for conversations and discussions. Students can discuss and complete these in groups, or they can be completed as a class. Role cards are also provided to give students different responsibilities. These should be discussed whole group.

“Come Prepared” Cards: The standards also state that students should “come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material.” These cards would be assigned to students for homework or classwork. Students would complete the tasks on these cards prior to engaging in conversations with their classmates.

Literature Conversation Cards: These cards are used during conversations and discussions based on fiction texts. These are great for students to use with literature circle and listening center books, whole-group novels, or other stories, plays, or poems being read as a class. These cards also address Common Core Standards related to “Reading: Literature”.

Informational Text Conversation Cards: These cards are used during conversations and discussions based on non-fiction texts. These are great to use with social studies and science textbooks, classroom periodicals (like Scholastic News or Time for Kids), or other magazine, newspaper, or online articles. These cards also address Common Core Standards related to “Reading: Informational Texts”.

Rubric: A rubric is provided to be used for teacher observations of collaborative discussions.
