Recently, a kindergarten teacher and I decided to embark on a collaborative effort between our classrooms to learn the Gettysburg Address. One of my main goals was for my 3rd graders to not only learn the Gettysburg Address, but also to understand why it is such an important piece of American history.
The following unit is what I developed in order to accomplish both goals. The results that this unit produced were extremely positive! My 3rd graders took true ownership of their responsibility I gave them of teaching their kindergarten buddies the background events leading up to the Gettysburg Address.
I broke this unit into three phases that could last 2-3 weeks. This unit meets a high number of Common Core standards in ELA, history, as well as speaking and listening strands.
I hope you enjoy this resource!
