This English language arts resource was created as a unique way to get 2nd grade students to complete fun reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities related to collective nouns (words that describe a collection of things). At the center of this product are twenty-five (25) simple and silly poems, one for each of the following collective nouns for groups of animals: herd, bed, team, pack, army, gaggle, band, troop, flock, mob, clowder, parliament, mess, drove, colony, flight, pride, bale, leash, barrel, bloat, ambush, sloth, bloom, and gaze.
How It Works: Students practice reading originally written, focus-based poems either independently, with a partner, or whole class, as a way to help strengthen their decoding, fluency, grammatical, and comprehension skills. Each poem related to a specific collective noun is read and a star is shaded in after every read. A picture of the animal is then colored and a collective noun word search completed. For lesson extension activities, students may choose to read two facts about an animal, with drawing a related picture and writing a sentence. Collective noun fun!

*With the exception of a few non-student pages, this product has been produced entirely using black and white ink.
*While this resource meets Common Core Language Standards for 2nd grade, it can be used with 3rd or 4th graders who need a little more hands-on exposure to collective nouns. In addition, the activities in this resource are perfect for ELL/ESL/EFL students, RSP students (special education), and students who receive speech therapy services.
*All poems have been originally written by me! :)
*As a way to save paper, you may choose to copy certain pages back-to-back (2-sided). REMINDER: Every collective noun poem has been typed and formatted to be projectable. That is, a copy of the poem can be placed under a document camera or another similar device and “projected” for whole class use.
