Included in this packet are all of the documents I have used, tweaked, and improved over four years of teaching seniors. Sometime during the first quarter, depending upon the ambitions of my student population, we devote 2 – 3 class blocks to reading, analyzing, and drafting college application essays. Students typically struggle with these essays; they have previously directed all of their writing energy to expository or persuasive writing, and they are suddenly faced with creating a precise, mature, and appealing narrative that may be a key factor in deciding their future. This unit provides students with sample essays, both stellar and lacking, analyzed by experts in easy to understand terms.
The unit includes a comprehensive packet discussing the purpose and structure of the college application essay; successful application essays with analysis; a draft essay with feedback and the follow-up revision; weak essays for analysis and discussion; and a set of personal statements with critical feedback.
These are all documents that I have gathered from a variety of sources, used successfully in my classroom, and revised based on student feedback and application success.
