An effective personal statement or college essay must be written in a student's unique voice. But what does that voice sound like? This simple exercise helps students recognize the unique characteristics of their writing voices. Then, when they proceed to write personal essays, they will have a sample of their writing voice available for reference. These materials were developed by Susan Knoppow and Kim Lifton of Wow Writing Workshop, national experts in college essay writing. They reflect insight gleaned from conversations with admissions officers, school counselors and teachers about what students need to tell their stories in their own voices and in their own words.
