Proceeds support programming to rescue students from gangs and violence, and steer them toward academic success and productive adulthood.
This product, College not Corrections Part II: Interventions and Strategies, is the second of a two volume series. College not Corrections is intended to assist educators in efforts to reach our most challenging students. Research shows that students exposed to particular risk factors are two to four times more likely to drop out and become involved in criminal activity. However, research also shows that the employment of protective factors can reduce the probability of dropping out and criminality. This also increases the likelihood of academic achievement and a productive adulthood. Teachers are in key positions to introduce these protective factors into the lives of at-risk and high-risk students.
College not Corrections Part II: Interventions and Strategies will present evidence-based strategies to prevent and decrease the spread of gang related issues that hinder the learning environment. Focus will be placed on utilizing approaches that deter gang activity while promoting academic investment, morality, and pro-social behaviors. Major emphasis will be placed on understanding gang culture, building relationship, communication, implementing protective factors, and applying engaging teaching strategies which appeal to high-risk students. No one resource can be expected to fix a school’s gang problem. However, upon completion of College not Corrections you will have an increased competency to deter, manage, and eliminate gang related behaviors in the academic milieu. The goal is to save lives by helping our most troubled students reach their full potential. Let’s guide the students that need us the most to colleges and institutes of higher learning, away from correctional facilities and despair.
