Colonial America- English Settlers and the Native Americans Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 10 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teachers key for easy marking. It contains 27 questions based on a Crash Course U.S. History video and the History.com website.
Students will be introduced to the English colonies in the New World and their early, and violent, interactions with Native Americans by watching the video: Crash Course U.S. History: The Natives and the English. The video will introduce students to the initial relations between the Chesapeake colony (Virginia) and the local tribes led by Powhatan. John Smith, the life of Pocahontas, the failure of the Virginia Company, and the Indian Uprising of 1644 are all covered. The video then moves on to the New England colonies and the Puritan relations with the Native Americans. Puritan land acquisitions, religious fervor, massacres on both sides, and the uneasy trading alliance between the two are all discussed. The video then provides a history of King Phillips War, the most violent confrontation between the New England colonists and the Native Americans. The destruction caused by the war and the barbarity of both sides are detailed. After completing the video, students will proceed to the history.com website and learn more about King Phillip's War. Metacom's (King Phillip's) reasons for starting the war against the English, the casualties caused by the war, and the destruction of his people are all covered by the article.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
