Colonial America- The Southern Colonies Webquest and Video Analysis with Key- this is a 14 page document that contains a webquest and a completed teacher’s key for easy marking. It contains 36 questions based on a Crash Course U.S. History video and an online U.S. history study guide.
Students will first be introduced to the origins of the Southern colonies by viewing a clip of Crash Course: U.S. History: The Quakers, the Dutch, and the Ladies. The clip will explain how the Carolina's were formed and discuss the failed Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia. After watching the video, students will proceed to an online article database which will provide them detailed information about:
-The founding of Maryland and its failed attempt at a Catholic haven.
- The establishment of the Carolina colony, its different forms of development in the north and south, and the eventual splitting of the colony into North Carolina and South Carolina.
- The founding of Georgia and its Enlightenment ideal of a second chance for English debtors.
Students will also read an article about indentured servitude, its role in developing the Southern colonies, and learn about the drawbacks of the policy. The anger over indentured servants not being treated fairly is tied back to one of the causes of Bacon's Rebellion mentioned in the earlier video.
This webquest can be easily used as an introduction to the topic, a study guide, or a quick and easy sub plan.
