This unit is an extremely in-depth look at colonial America. The unit is comprised of nine lessons which cover topics including the Declaration of Independence, key events during the time, famous people and groups, colonies, trade and resources, and map making. The unit ends with a culminating event that requires students to report findings on an assigned person and colony. A journal will be kept by each students throughout many of the lessons. There are two options for the culminating event: a living museum and a website. Many resources and extra activities and ideas are included with the unit. The unit should take a total of around 6 weeks to complete.
This unit was developed for a course at Missouri State University in the school of education. The course focused on elementary education and lesson planning. The unit aligns to the standards laid out by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; all the GLEs are listed in the lesson.
