Would you like to get kids excited about life in the 17th century?
Do you want to reach kids by showing them that there are practical and interesting ways to apply their learning?
This project integrates the 5th grade Social Studies Curriculum (Colonial America) with the Science Curriculum (Simple Machine) in a hands-on, authentic way! Using these pamphlets, each student can choose (using the Colonial America Meets Simple Machines Choice Slips- available for purchase separately) which division interests them the most. Will they help design a way to transport water from the river to the farmer's fields as a part of the Water Management Division? Or will they construct a machine that will help clear the heavily forested land to make way for the newest colonists?
There is an independent grade as well as a group grade for each division so teachers can assess knowledge and application of learning, fairly.
This one was of the favorite projects of our year!
Brainstorm. Design. Construct. Improve. Inform and Defend.
*Print these pamphlets back to back so each child knows exactly what is expected of them for the individual and group components.*
