PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This activity/lesson is focused around the events that led to America going against Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. In this activity, students come into class and the teacher tells them that a break up note was found on the floor after class. The teacher then reads the note aloud. Students get to make suggestions about who wrote the note before the teacher tells them it is signed by the 13 colonies and it is a break up letter with England. Students then analyze the Declaration of Independence and look for ways it is similar to a break up note. They then have the opportunity to rewrite a popular song with lyrics about the relationship of England and the 13 Colonies.

Included with this activity is a detailed lesson plan, example breakup note, primary source analysis of the Declaration of Independence, breakup letter song lyrics for Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" with coordinating space for rewriting the lyrics, and blank song lyric page.
