PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This assignment gives students a chance to demonstrate their understanding of the colonial period and the ideas and documents that supported the American struggle for independence (John Locke and Common Sense by Thomas Paine). It would be useful in an American history, civics, or English Language Arts class. Middle school students would most likely need scaffolding to understand the documents, while high school students should be able to complete the assignment independently. Instructions, relevant texts, planning frame using the ACE writing strategy, and grading rubric are included.
