Each correlates to a non-fiction text by Kate Waters and engages students in writing activities that address each of the writing genres within the CCSS for ELA. Note: You will need to have access to the texts specified for these packs, as they are specific to the books by Kate Waters. The details for the three packets:

Packet 1:
This packet contains a mini-unit using “On the Mayflower,” by Kate Waters. This is a great resource for Thanksgiving time or a unit on colonial life. It contains:

Character Organizer – Take notes on what the character wears, has, and does.

Informational Writing 1 – Compare and contrast William and Ellen

Informational Writing 2 – Compare and contrast one of the characters to yourself.

Narrative Writing – Write about what your life would be like if you lived when William and Ellen did.

Opinion Writing – Write about whether you would want to travel on the Mayflower or not.

Packet 2:
This packet contains a mini-unit using Sarah Morton’s Day and Samuel Eaton’s Day by Kate Waters. This is a great resource for Thanksgiving time or a unit on colonial life. It contains:

Sequence Organizer – Take notes on what the character does during his/her day.

Character Organizer – Take notes on what the character wears, has, and does.

Informational Writing 1 – Compare and contrast Samuel and Sarah

Informational Writing 2 – Compare and contrast one of the characters to yourself.

Narrative Writing – Write about what your life would be like if you lived when Samuel and Sarah did.

Opinion Writing – Write about whether you would want to live during the colonial era or not.

Packet 3:
This packet contains a mini-unit using “Tapenum’s Day: A Wampanoag Indian Boy in Pilgrim Times,” by Kate Waters. This is a great resource for Thanksgiving time or a unit on colonial life. It contains:

Character Organizer – Take notes on what the character wears, has, and does.
