Help students to learn about the origins of our great country! Let this be your very first unit for your eleventh grade English students!
This unit which contains three Power Points and ten word documents. The unit covers colonial literature which includes authors William Bradford and Mary Rowlandson and introduces Puritanism with Jonathan Edwards and Anne Bradstreet.
The first PowerPoint will introduce students to the colonial period and gives basic facts regarding early colonists and their style of writing. This PowerPoint consists of 6 slides.
The next PowerPoint will introduce students to William Bradford, Mary Rowlandson, and Anne Bradstreet. This PowerPoint consists of 20 slides. Activities, literary terms, and assignments are included on the PowerPoint.
Two additional lessons have now been added: Jonathan Edwards’ sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and a fun project that allows students to create their own colony!
This additional PowerPoint consists of 22 slides and introduce students to the Puritan lifestyle and to Jonathan Edwards. Students will understand the Puritan beliefs and overall lifestyle. These slides will help students understand the religious fervor expressed in Edwards’ sermon.
As students read Edwards’ sermon, there are reading questions to aid reading comprehension for students. Lastly, students will be introduced to rhetorical devices utilized in Edwards’ sermon. Examples are provided and students are then instructed to locate examples in Edwards’ sermon.
