Looking for lessons using math that are different and challenging? This fun week of activities is themed around Mount Vernon, George Washington, and ordering colonial meals using British pounds shillings, and pence. It's is PERFECT to use during Thanksgiving and also during President's day or week but is a great set to use anytime.
Students choose and order meals from the colonial menus and then figure out their bill using pounds, shillings and pence. It looks easy but it's guaranteed to be fun and challenging!
Students will to order a main dish with side dishes, sweets (dessert), and beverage. They will total up the cost of the pence, shillings, and pounds for their meal. think about our place value system as they trade 12 pence for 1 shilling and trade 20 shillings for a 1 pound note. Manipulatives for the currency is provided to run on card stock or construction paper in color and/or black and white.
There are 5 days of activities in this set as well as online website links to show students real colonial money. You will give students the colonial menu and they will order meal(s) and compute the prices counting out and using their manipulative pounds, shillings, and pence.
Print the menus and create real looking menus by gluing them onto a file folder or 12x18 inch piece of construction paper. Laminate your menus if you want to preserve them for use year after year.
